10 mins In the Life Of An Old School Linkbuilder

Seeing as my servers have fried with 2 different host companies, and Virgin / NTL problams all on the same day, I decided to do a bit of old school link hunting for Hobo (I just don’t get the time these days to linkbuild to Hobo in the old ways - 1. I’m too embarrassed to throw low quality links to the site and 2) I would rather spend time blogging and picking up natural links to build domain authority - which I think is more valuable in the whole than ranking for one or two narrow terms with all the tyre kickers around in seo these days…..

  • I threw a couple of links at our DMOZ page to get it back into Google, in case it NOT being there meant the link was effectively ignored. I’ll probably continue to do that until I see that page in Google - I often think perhaps I should spend some time strenthening the link profile I have already got…

I wanted to see if I could pick off some decent links for Hobo, so where to start?

  1. OK - so I type “INVERCLYDE” in to Google (that will give me a list of geographically relevant sites with some domain authority. CHECK
  2. First up - my council site - gov.uk/ - Looks cool - Google likes these sites because they are old, well linked to and trusted. Oh good it’s got a business directory. I’ll submit the site there (even though the site itself is a mess structure wise. Oh well I can drop a few links to my listing when I see it (and I have an idea to get more links from this site) CHECK
  3. Next up Wikipedia page - I suppose I could pull some stats togehter on the area and try for a link - but Google doesnt really count those links - so I will leave that one for later CHECK
  4. Next up is a 7 yr old local News site, and it’s got a links to local businesses with only a few links on it. Cool - I will ask for a link there. CHECK
  5. One of the local authorities who we actually work with is next in the SERPS - cool, I will email them and ask for a link in their links pages. CHECK
  6. MMMM. THere’s another central UK government site in there - VERY Authoratitive. They have cases studies and marketing tips for businesses. I’ll contact them and ask if I can do a “beginners guide to SEO” on their site for a link back. CHECK
  7. Hello - an old charity site in there that looks as if it’s website was last updated in 1998. I’ll contact them and offer a free site with a free install of Wordpress (and get a footer link - gives me an idea for all my clients) CHECK

OK that’s the top ten results for the word INVERCLYDE.

10 mins - One keyword, more than 7 good link prospects, all QUALITY LINKS. 100% sure I’ll probably get 5 of those links and sure if I dig down deeper on that term I will find as many link opportunities in each SERP.

No spamming involved…..

Wonder if my server is back online……oops better not forget my link to Hobo SEO Scotland so my mate with the exact match domain doesn’t get sitelinks lol.
